What is AVIF?

AVIF is a still-image format based on AV1. It usually makes smaller files than JPG at similar quality. Some older apps still cannot open it, which is why converting AVIF to JPG or PNG is useful.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

Are my files uploaded?

No. Images are read and converted in this tab. Nothing is sent to a conversion API. The host that serves the page can see a normal page request, not the photos you convert.

Which browsers work?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari with JavaScript enabled. The page uses the browser’s image decoder when it can, and a WASM libavif codec otherwise.

Is conversion lossless? What about quality?

PNG output is lossless. AVIF and JPG are lossy; the quality slider (default 70) applies to those. Re-encoding an already-lossy file can add more compression artifacts.
